A disappointing final round of 79 saw him finish 5 under, KJ Choi and David Toms ended tied on 13 under with Choi winning the play-off.
Luke Donald was the highest ranked European on 10 under.
McDowell was 3 clear with one to play towards the end of the delayed 3rd round yesterday but double bogeyed the 18th.
The US Open champion and Ryder cup star hit 6 bogeys and a double bogey in his final round but is trying to remain positive.
