Decison on Ward’s participation at Olympics to be made later

A decision on Joe Ward’s appeal is expected to be announced at around four o’clock this afternoon.

The Westmeath fighter has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport after his non-selection as a wildcard for the London Olympics.

Ward is the highest-ranked European in his division but lost in controversial circumstances to a home fighter at the qualifiers in Turkey earlier this year.

The European champion was told he does not fit the requirements for a wildcard as the place is traditionally held for competitors from developing and smaller nations.

Ward has taken this case as an individual.
