Day one of Olympics mixed for irish competitors

Its been a mixed opening day for the Irish at the London Olympics.

In boxing Darren O’Neill beat   his opponent to claim his place in the last 16 of the middleweight division while  John Joe Nevin is also through to the last 16 in the bantamweight division.

In rowing, Latvian born Sanita Puspure qualified for the quarter finals of the women’s single sculls.

There was disappointment however for the three-man road cycling team of Nicolas Roche, Dan Martin and David McCann finished well down the field in the men’s road race.

the Olympic dream also ended for  Ireland’s judo player Lisa Kearney, gymnast Kieran Behan and swimmer Barry Murphy who  all competed this morning but  failed to qualify for their next rounds
