Criticisms Of This Year’s Senior Championship Format

The manger of the defending Clare Senior Hurling champions has criticised the format of this year’s competition, as his side prepare to begin the defence of the Canon Hamilton.

Sixmilebridge play Éire Óg this weekend in the sides’ first Championship outing of the season, but Tim Crowe has bemoaned a Championship structure which means half of all teams will play only two games.

All teams will progress to Round 2, regardless of this weekend’s results, but the teams who lose those games in a fortnight will see their seasons cut short.

Sixmilebridge boss Tim Crowe there, and while the 2019 champions start off with with a clash against Éire Óg, 2018 champions Ballyea will meet Crusheen.

The teams met in last year’s Quarter-Finals, when Crusheen came out on top, before they fell short against Cratloe in the last four.

Crusheen manager James Carrig says the win was deservedly theirs but heading into the weekend there isn’t much between the two teams.
