Clare’s Munster Council representative says the proposal to change the provincial championship seeding was decided by the vote from Limerick GAA’s delegates.
The newly introduced arrangement will see The Banner lose out on their Munster semi final spot for next year.
Last night, the Munster Council passed a motion to alter the seeding for the 2026 Munster Senior Football Championship to seed the two highest ranked teams based on National Football League standings.
The proposal was ratified for the next three seasons and will see Kerry and Cork kept apart in the draw for next year.
Clare, Tipperary and Waterford stood in opposition to the proposal, while Limerick joined Cork and Kerry in backing the motion.
A tie among delegates left the decision in the hands of the management of the Munster Council, which voted unanimously in favour of the changes.
Clare Munster Council Rep, Bernard Keane, has been telling Clare FM’s Morning Focus he understood Limerick’s players and management were opposed to the proposal.
Meanwhile, the Chair of Clare GAA says the decision represents a backwards step for the provincial championship.
Under the former structure, in place since 2015, the two Munster finalists from the previous year were awarded semi final spots on opposite sides of the draw.
Clare GAA Chair, Kieran Keating, claims seeding the 2026 championship based on the league positions from 2025 is unjust.
He says the new system will prevent teams other then Cork and Kerry from gaining a foothold in the province.
