Clare suffered defeat today in their opening fixture of the 2019 National Camogie League.

Defending champions Kilkenny triumphed in John Lockes, Callan by 1-9 to 0-7 with Denise Gaule’s penalty before half-time crucial for the Noresiders.

Ger O’Connell’s team put in a good effort against the four-in-a-row chasing Cats and Amy Keating top scored with five points.

Roisin Begley got Clare’s first on four minutes and they stayed in touch with Ann Downey’s team until Gaule’s penalty before the break.  Keating and Eimear Kelly pointed but Clare trailed 1-6 to 0-3.

The task was mammoth afterwards but Clare didn’t drop their heads despite missing plenty of chances.

Keating kept the scoreboard ticking getting all four second half scores as the Banner outscored their opponents during that 30 minute period.  And Ciara Doyle denied Kilkenny a second green flag.

Next up is a home tie against Offaly on Saturday and O’Connell will take plenty of positives from this young Clare side.
