Callinan Insists Greater Work Required At Younger Ages To Ensure Gender Balance In Sport

A former Clare intercounty player insists greater work is needed with young girls to ensure the gender balance is kept across the sporting landscape.

It follows a Red C poll released in conjunction with the launch of the 2025 Lidl National Football League, which shows 43% of current intercounty players don’t consider themselves role models, largely because of gender issues and cultural norms.

The same proportion, meanwhile, identified a lack of knowledge of players as a barrier to attending female events despite a 24% increase in overall interest in women’s sport last year.

Clare FM analyst Ann Marie Callinan, says despite recent changes to redress the balance at the games top tiers, the same must be implemented at grass roots levels.
