Paddy Barnes' dream of another Olympic medal is over.
Ireland's two-time bronze medalist has suffered a narrow defeat in his preliminary round bout and says that his Olympic career is now over.
After an epic contest, the Belfast light-flyweight lost a split decision to 20-year-old Spaniard, Samuel Heredia Carmona.
Barnes was playing catch-up after losing the first round, but he fought-back bravely in the second to tie the bout.
The effort appeared to wear him down during the final round, which two of the three judges awarded to his opponent for a narrow loss.
Afterwards, a devastated Barnes admitted that he had struggled to make the 49-kilo weight limit and that had sapped him of the energy during the fight.
