David Russell’s side had to battle to secure a 2-0 win over Kilkishen Celtic at a rain soaked Lees Road.
Both goals came in the opening half through Conor Mullen and Tomás Hehir, but the margin could have been greater only for a fine display by the Kilkishen goalkeeper.
Elsewhere today, Kilrush Rangers will spend Christmas on the bottom of the Premier Division standings after losing out 2-1 at home to Bridge United in a game that saw former intercounty team mates David Tubridy and Podge Collins line out on opposing sides.
