The Glasgow club approached the Irish international – now a free agent after a brief loan spell at West Brom – before he left for Euro 2012.
The midfielder looks set to join up with former Irish international Owen Coyle at Bolton Wanderers.
The Championship side hope to tie up the deal next week.
