Significant Centenary Event Brings East And West Clare Memorial Committees Together

100 years ago this week, between forty and fifty IRA Volunteers from across east Clare, were carefully billeted in houses across the parish of Coolmeen.

They were there to take part in one of the most ambitious military actions undertaken by the IRA in Clare, during the War of Independence.

Remarkably, the action, although occurring in the heart of west Clare, had more east Clare IRA fighters than those from the west.

The east Clare men had travelled forty-five miles west to attack British forces in the heavily garrisoned town of Kilrush, on Friday 22nd April 1921.
