Reactions To Calls For Homework To Be Banned

On Wednesday’s Morning Focus, Alan was joined by Colm Davoren who is Assistant Principal of CBS Primary School in Ennis along with Trish Lehane who is a mother of two living in Cratloe. The duo reacted to letters recently sent to Education Minister Norma Foley from school children and their parents about the possibility of ban homework indefinitely. Colm suggested that homework can be used in a positive manner a large amount of the time and highlighted that he is against the idea of banning homework entirely. He described his idea for homework to be altered slightly in order to make it more practical and beneficial to both school children and parents. Trish spoke about the added pressure and struggle that homework can bring to both a child and parent’s life and gave her view on what should be done in schools to make homework a more enjoyable learning experience. She also spoke about the significance of placing students in groups of their own ability throughout the classroom in order to inspire confidence in young pupils.
