Reaction To Norma Foley’s First Primary School Curriculum Changes in 25 years

On Wednesday’s Morning Focus, Alan was joined by Cathal Crowe who is a Fianna Fáil TD from Meelick and Brendan Horan who is the Clare representative for the Irish National Teachers’ Association. The duo reacted to Education Minister Norma Foley’s proposed new curriculum changes for primary schools which have been brought to cabinet. Cathal described his satisfaction with the changes which he believes will adapt to children’s needs currently and highlighted that teachers require the correct amount of training in order to have adequate knowledge of the changes that will come into place. The changes will see less emphasis placed on subjects such as religion and more significance placed on learning foreign languages, wellbeing and environmental studies. Brendan expressed his excitement for the new curriculum changes and suggested that the current curriculum is no longer functional. He believes that the drafted new curriculum framework is an investment into the future.
