Seán discussed the history, the politics and diplomacy of St Patrick’s Day celebrations at the White House in light of Taoiseach Leo Varadkar’s upcoming meeting with the US president Joe Biden on St Patrick’s Day. He spoke about the historical presentation of the bowl of shamrocks at the White House to the American president on St Patrick’s Day annually. Seán highlighted the origin of the ritual that began in 1952 and discussed how it has been received by American presidents down through the years.
