On Wednesday’s Morning Focus, Alan was joined by Susan Nagle who is with the Acute Onology Community Nursing Service at University Hospital Limerick. Susan discussed the origins of the acute onology nursing service which was funded by the National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP). She described the service itself whereby clinical nurses contact patients and assess them over the phone in an attempt to reduce the overcrowding at University Hospital Limerick. She also believes this provides the best service possible to vulnerable patients and will help to save many lives in the future. She spoke about the crucial aspect of the service with patients being able to contact the number provided from Monday to Sunday 24/7. Susan also noted that 84% of people that used the service did not require emergency department attendance.
