Clare is preparing to celebrate its title as European Volunteering Capital 2027, recognising the thousands of people across the county who give their time to support their communities.
Joining Alan Morrissey to discuss the importance of volunteering was Stevie Hayes from the Clare Civil Defence.
Clare Civil Defence is part of the national Civil Defence network in Ireland, a volunteer-based organisation that supports emergency services and communities across the country. Established in 1950 under the Department of Defence, Civil Defence was originally formed to provide aid and protection to civilians in the event of wartime emergencies. Over time, its focus evolved to address peacetime challenges such as natural disasters, severe weather events and major public incidents.
The volunteers’ dedication reflects a strong community spirit and commitment to public service that has been at the heart of Civil Defence since its foundation. Through ongoing training and national support, Clare Civil Defence continues to uphold the organisation’s mission – to protect, assist and serve the people of Ireland in times of emergency and need.
