On Thursday, Morning Focus broadcast live from inside St. Flannan’s Cathedral in Killaloe.
Alan Morrissey was joined by numerous guests. Cathoirleach of the Killaloe Municipal District, Councillor Tony O’Brien. He discussed his role as Cathairleach of Killaloe and how it differs from his last position as Cathoirleach of Clare.
Afterwards Alan was joined by Arlene White, member of the Killaloe/Ballina Local History Society. Arlene discussed the history of Killaloe. Debra Dudgen, another member of the Killaloe/Ballina Local History Society also joined the conversation to speak about the history of St. Flannans Cathedral in Killaloe.
Jean Tierny, coordinator of Clare Youth Service UBU Programmes East Clare also visited St. Flannan’s Cathedral. She highlighted what the Clare youth Service UBU does and what services they provide to the youth of the community.
Alan had a chat with Brona Moriarty, Project administrator of Killaloe/Ballina Community and Family Resource Centre. She spoke about the background of the organisation and projects they have worked on.
Maeve Óg O’Leary, Munster and Irish Women’s Rugby Player highlighted how important Killaloe Ballina RFC is to her and also outlined the other sports she had played in Killaloe Ballina growing up. Sticking with the topic of rugby, Alan was joined by Tuathla Ryan who plays for the women’s under 18s Munster Rugby squad. Tuathla told us about her experience with the sport and highlighted her impressive career so far.
Shortly after, Alan was joined by Oliver Kirwan to discuss what can people expect at the Quest Lough Derg that will be taking place on the 9th of September.
Cillian Murphy who is involved with the East Clare Tourism and Tourism on the Lake joined Alan to spread the word of Killaloe’s lakeside activities. Bridget Tuohy from Killaloe Tidy Towns spoke with Alan about the positive impact Tidy Towns has on the community.
Deirdre Scanlon, local legend and well known figure in the trad and contemporary music community also joined Alan in Killaloe. She spoke about her musical background and performed her original song.
Towards the end of the show Alan spoke with Karen Speed Andrews, Chairperson of Killaloe/Ballina Community Garden about the origin of the garden. Afterwards Alan met Damian Madden who is a volunteer for the Killaloe Coast Guard Unit. Damian provided some interesting information about the Killaloe Coast Guard Unit and highlighted that they are always looking for new volunteers.
Councillor Joe Cooney was elected as Clare Cathoirleach of Clare County Council at the end of last month. To end the show Alan was joined by The Derg Trio and Tommy Hayes one of the greatest bodhran players of all time. The Derg Trio consists of Sarah King, Celia Donoghue and Joe O Dubhghaill. They ended Thursday’s Morning Focus Show with a beautiful musical performance.
