Limerick Based Historian Highlights Reality Of War Of Independence IRA Activities

Today on Morning Focus, Dr Brian Hughes, Department of History, Mary Immaculate College, Limerick joined us in studio to highlight the reality of the War of Independence, as he does so in his new book.

The War of Independence and the IRA that waged war against the British Empire’s presence in this country has been the focus of a lot of attention over the past number of years. It’s as we move through the Decade of Centenaries – a ten-year celebration and period of remembrance of the events which shaped the country, from the Easter Rising, the War of Independence, Civil War, and beyond. Recently, the role that the Royal Irish Constabulary played in the Wars a hundred years ago has been highlighted after the decision to hold – and then postpone – a commemoration event for them. However, two sides exist in every war and Dr Hughes has written a book about the IRA and the relationship they had with the communities they moved in.
