Leaving Kiwi Life Behind To Farm Seaweed On Inis Mór

Like many young people, Jenny O’Halloran took off for pastures anew and headed for New Zealand a number of years ago.

Life was good on the other side of the world; she married and had a young daughter there.

But one day, the phone rang and her father back in Ireland, who had set up a seaweed harvesting business back in 2002, told her he wanted to retire.

So he left it up to his daughter – did she want to come home and take over the small but busy farm on Inis Mór, or stay in New Zealand indefinitely?

Fast forward a couple of years and Blath na Mara is going from strength to strength under the direction of Jenny and her family.

She tells her story on this week’s Farm Focus podcast (from 1:39)
