What do we know about the new strain of Covid-19?

As of midnight last night, a travel ban on passengers from the UK has been enacted for 48 hours to prevent the spread of a new strain of Covid-19.  The new strain is believed to be 70% more transmissible and Britain’s Health Secretary has said the new variant is “out of control” there.  What’s known about the new strain of the coronavirus? Is it likely that it’s already on the island of Ireland? Will our hospitals be able to cope?
