Under new legislation, gardaí will be able to hand out on-the-spot fines of up to €500 for people who break Covid-19 restrictions inclduing those who host or attend house parties. However, the Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL) has expressed concern at the introduction of new garda powers – even going as far as to label them a ‘mistake’. The watchdog believes this is an attempt to steamroll in new legislation and are urging TD’s to vote against it. They’ve also questioned how the laws and fines would work in practice. Do you agree?

On Thursday’s Morning Focus, Gavin Grace spoke to Liam Herrick, Executive Director of the Irish Council for Civil Liberties.
