Follow The Old Road

A very fine motorway runs through County Clare, taking the motorist through the county at a high speed.

It also has a rich history of river roads, railway lines, tracks and trails – many of them no longer in use.

Jo Kerrigan has been on a mission to revisit and commemorate some of these routes, inside the Banner county and indeed all around Ireland.

Jo has compiled details of them in ‘Follow the Old Road’, which has some fascinating detail on the River Shannon which was represented on maps created all the way back in the second century.

The book also details canal development in the 18th and 19th centuries at Doonbeg and Killaloe, as well as the history of the West Clare Railway.

All the photos in the book are captured by Richard Mills.

Jo joined Gavin on the line to talk about the book and the history of travelling in Clare.
