Family Carer Reacts To Motion Calling For Reform Of Carer’s Allowance Scheme

On Tuesday’s Morning Focus, Alan was joined by Marion Costello who was a full-time carer for both her parents. Her father unfortunately passed away in November and she is now caring for her mother who has Alzheimer’s disease. Catherine Cox who is Head of Communications and Policy with Family Carer’s Ireland also joined the discussion. The duo discussed the motion recently passed by the Government which was brought forward by TD Michael McNamara who called on the coalition to increase the Income Disregard for Carer’s Allowance to €900 per week and €450 per week for a single carer per household in Budget 2024. Marion who acts as a full time carer for her mother described her delight with the motion. She mentioned her situation where she is unable to get a part-time work as a result of her commitment to looking after her mother. Catherine made reference to the number of family carer’s in Ireland and the long overdue overhaul of the scheme. She suggested that family carer’s should be backed with proper support and services as well as financially.
