Clare Women Discuss And Preview Upcoming Gender Referendum To Be Held In November

On Thursday’s Morning Focus, Alan was joined by Catríona Gleeson who is the CEO of Women for Election in Killaloe along with Karen O’Donnell who is the Director of Rape Crisis Midwest. The duo discussed the upcoming referendum on gender equality relating to articles 40 and 41 of the Constitution which refers to ‘women in the home’. Catríona provided her reaction to the referendum and described the ambition of Women For Election who aim to address the underrepresentation of women in both local and national Government. She stated some of the alarming facts surrounding gender equality in Ireland and noted that the referendum may bring Ireland up to date regarding gender equality. Karen expressed her satisfaction with the referendum and believes that it is a big step in the right direction as regards to demanding a change in attitude and behaviour towards women in Ireland. She also complimented and praised the ongoing work Citizens’ Assembly are carrying out in areas especially as sexual and gender based violence towards women in the country.
