Centenary Commemoration Of The Rineen Ambush

On Monday’s Morning Focus, Alan Morrissey was joined by Mary Crawford, Chairperson of the Mid Clare Commemoration Committee and John O’Neill, Grandson of Ignatius O Neill, Commanding Officer on the day of the Rineen Ambush.

One of the most memorable encounters of the War of Independence took place on the 22nd of September, 1920 at Dromin Hill, Rineen.

The Rineen Ambush saw a British Army convoy ambushed by the Mid Clare Brigade of the IRA.

The aftermath of the ambush saw the revenge sacking, looting and burning of the villages of Ennistymon, Lahinch and Miltown Malbay by the Black and Tans on that day and the following day, the 23rd of September, 1920.

The delayed Centenary Commemoration of the Rineen Ambush will take place this week, on Sunday the 24th of September.
