Staff at Ennis hospital will receive the first doses of the Covid-19 vaccine today. It comes as the health service comes under extreme strain due to the rapid increase in the spread of the virus.

The number of patients being treated for COVID-19 at the region’s main hospital has trebled in the past week.

There are 66 people with the virus in University Hospital Limerick today according to HSE figures – up from 19 seven days ago.

This is the highest level recorded there since the beginning of the pandemic.
