Welcome to another episode of Ours To Protect, as we take a closer look at biodiversity and sustainability in Co Clare.
For this week’s episode, Pat Flynn visit the world famous Cliffs of Moher in Co Clare.
More than 1.1m people from across the globe visited the popular attraction last year. That figure is rising an well on its way to reaching the pre-covid record of 1.6m visitors.
At a time when tourism across the country was brought to its knees as a result of the pandemic, staff at the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Experience found opportunity. They were able to work on their biodiversity plan and through monitoring the ecologically sensitive area, made a number observations.
Along with the Burren in Clare, the Cliffs of Moher has UNESCO Global Geopark status so particular attention is given to the flora and fauna of the area.
Pat Flynn spoke with tour guide and customer service agent Brigid Forde who is also a member of the Green Team at the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Experience.
Tips:
* Establish your own Green Team and share the details of any work done and observations made between members. Meet regularly to discuss how your plan is developing.
* If you have a significant footfall in any area you’ve set aside for biodiversity, fence if off to protect that area and the plants and flowers therein.
* Sensitive signage will go a long towards educating people about what they can see at your site. Provide details of rare flowers or insects that can been seen.
* If you visitors ask you why an area is fenced off at your facility/place of work, be prepared to advise them about what you’re doing and they can see there. It may encourage them to establish their own project.
