Design work will begin later this year on a new 96-bed block at University Hospital Limerick.

It's after the HSE confirmed 'seed funding' for the unit, which is seen as crucial for improving bed capacity in the UL Hospitals Group.

24-single-bed rooms will be provided o neach of its four floors, and the total project cost is estimated at 25 million euro.

UL Hospitals Group CEO Colette Cowan has called the development a milestone, and says they look forward to advancing the project further.
