After 20 years of campaigning, construction on a new coastguard unit for Doolin will begin this week.

The new facilities will include a garage area for the storage of boats, equipment and transport as well as changing facilities and an operations room, a stark contrast with the current station which has been described as ‘primitive’.
Government have provided around two million euro for the project, which is expected to take just under a year to complete.
Mattie Shannon of the Doolin Coastguard says it’s a great moment for the volunteers, and for North Clare, and should lead to a more efficient rescue service.
