Monika Matracka closed her eyes and let out a huge sigh of relief when the verdict was read out at 4.42 this afternoon.
She spent almost two weeks on trial for Michal Rejmer’s murder but was convicted of the lesser charge of manslaughter by a majority of eleven jurors to one.
During the trial, the court heard they’d been in a long-term relationship that came to an end sometime before the end of 2015 but that they still lived together.
Michal was reported missing on Jan 6th last year and his body was found in their back garden two days later.
Monika initially told Gardaí she hadn’t seen him since the day before New Year’s Eve, but eventually admitted killing him in self defence.
She said she tried to run away from him after he came into her room with a knife and that she stabbed him with it when he fell down the stairs.
The 35-year-old was remanded in custody ahead of sentencing and her case is due to come before the court again on Monday week.
