Woman dies after Clare sea rescue

 

 

A woman has drowned after being swept out to sea near Liscannor.

This tragic incident happened at around 3 o’clock yesterday afternooon when the 35 year old  was swimming at Kimacreehy – about a kilometre across the bay from where lifeguards were on duty at Lahinch.

The 35 year old-believed to be from Limerick City -got into difficulty in the water and despite efforts by others to bring her to shore its understood the current was too strong and she was swept out to sea.

The alarm was raised and the rescue operation- co-ordinated by the Coastguard station on Valentia Island initially  involved Lahinch search and rescue, Doolin Coastguard and the navy patrol vessel, the LE Aisling, which located the woman and brought her ashore

Ambulance personal from Ennistymon and Ennis, as well as several units of the local fire brigade attended the scene and following efforts to resuscitate her at the pier at Liscannor, she was airlifted to Galway University Hospital by the Shannon Coastguard Helicopter.

However she was pronounced dead in hospital shortly before 6 and the incident is being investigated by Ennistymon Gardaí.
