Met Eireann has a status orange weather warning in place – with gale force winds of up to 120 kilometres per hour set to return by early afternoon, when thousands will begin driving home for Christmas.

It’s also set to be the beginning of one of the busiest weekends of the year at Shannon, where it’s estimated 43,000 passengers will fly in and out this Christmas, up almost 8,000 on last year.
