Irish uilleann pipes have been recognised by UNESCO as an important and unique cultural heritage symbol.
The Willie Clancy Summer School in Miltown Malbay has been working with a number of other piping clubs around the country to give the instrument this special status.

It has been welcomed by President Michael D Higgins as an important move, particularly for those who make, restore and play na píobaí uilleann.
It comes just a day after Irish folklore footage from the 1940s of renowned storytellers like Peig Sayers received the same recognition.
