Willie Clancy Summer School Instrumental In Bringing UNESCO Recognition To Uilleann Pipes

Irish uilleann pipes have been recognised by UNESCO as an important and unique cultural heritage symbol.

The Willie Clancy Summer School in Miltown Malbay has been working with a number of other piping clubs around the country to give the instrument this special status.

It has been welcomed by President Michael D Higgins as an important move, particularly for those who make, restore and play na píobaí uilleann.

It comes just a day after Irish folklore footage from the 1940s of renowned storytellers like Peig Sayers received the same recognition.
