West Clare Turf Cutter Says Selling Ban ‘An Easy Target’ For Government

A West Clare turf cutter says the banning of gifting the fuel to family and friends is an ‘easy target’ by Government.

It will no longer be permitted to sell or distribute harvested peat from September under new plans outlined this week by the Department of the Environment.

Bog owners will maintain the right to cut turf for their own use but will not be able to sell it onwards.

Willie Hanrahan, who’s a member of the Clare Branch of the Turf Cutters and Contractors Association, says the move will have a disproportionate impact on elderly people in the West of the county.
