Around 3,000 homes and businesses in the west of the county are to receive letters informing them that their drinking water quality is not as good is it could be.

Irish Water is to send the letters to customers of the West Clare Regional Water Scheme, but insists their water is still safe to drink.

This move is part of a new Water Services Policy which will see greater transparency for people on public water supplies.

In all, letters will be sent to homes and businesses on 53 supplies in 16 counties, to alert them to issues with their water supply.

Here, however, the utility says that while the drinking water quality of the West Clare Regional Water Supply is not as good as it could be, it is safe to drink.

The scheme supplies over 12,000 people in around 3,000 properties in an area that covers the likes of Miltown Malbay, Kilrush and Kilkee, as well as other communities in between.

The issue there is that the public water supply is potentially affected by elevated THMs or trihalomethanes, which are formed when organic material in treated water reacts with chlorine.

This will be fully explained in a booklet that is to accompany the letters.

To rectify the problem, Irish Water plans to upgrade the Doolough Water Treatment Plant that serves this scheme, with works due to be completed by 2020.
