West Clare Native Deputy Garda Commissioner Says Reduced Garda Numbers Not Behind Increased Road Deaths

The West Clare native Deputy Garda Commissioner insists a lack of Gardaí is not behind increased road deaths.

Annemarie McMahon says road crashes haven’t increased in the areas where roads policing was reduced.

165 people have been killed on the roads so far this year, 10 more than in the whole of last year.

The Kilmurry native, says the Dublin region saw the largest reduction in roads policing, due to a lag in recruitment and competing demands with other resources from community policing to specialist units where there are requirements.

She says she wouldn’t want to “give the impression that just because the roads policing units have shrunk somewhat in numbers that it has in any was lessened our focus or commitment to road safety”.
