A West Clare historian is hailing the significance of a new memorial in honour of children who died in the Clare County Nursery in Kilrush.

The sculpture was unveiled this week by Clare County Council at the Old Shanakyle Graveyard following a 12 month research project.

A report from the Mother and Baby Homes Commission published last year suggested as many as 168 babies may have died at the site when it was in operation between 1923 and 1932.

Speaking with Clare FM’s Josh Prenderville, Kilrush-based historian Rita McCarthy says it’s an appropriate recognition of the lives that were lost at the home.
