A West Clare woman says it will be as if children with complex needs are being punished if they’re forced to travel long distances to access a special secondary school.
Kilrush-based hair salon proprietor Dawn Bennett moved to the west of the county from Limerick several years ago to obtain a primary school place for her non-verbal son Jamie.
Now in fourth class, Jamie faces the prospect of having to make the 43-kilometre journey to Ennis each day to attend the nearest secondary school that meets his requirements.
Raising his case in the Dáil this week, Shannon Sinn Féin Deputy Donna McGettigan said children are being left “in a void” due to a lack of resources, and Dawn believes it’s nothing short of cruelty.
