The alert, which also covers Limerick, Cork, Kerry, Galway, Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo remains in place until 12 noon.

Local authority staff in Cork were forced to start pumping floodwaters off the road last night after the South suffered heavy rainfall, with footage online showing stranded motorists faced with deep surface waters.

Met Eireann forecaster Andrew Doran-Sherlock says the worst of it will clear up shortly and despite the bad start, today and tomorrow are likely to be the best days of this week.
