A man has had what’s been described as a “lucky escape” after losing control of his kayak close to Killaloe bridge.

Just before lunchtime yesterday, the man, who was on his own, had become pinned against a pontoon on the Tipperary side of the River Shannon, but he wasn’t trapped under water and was able to call for help.

While the Killaloe Coast Guard Unit was alerted, one of their members on board a cruise boat was closeby and able to assist.

The man was uninjured and able to continue his journey.

Last night, meanwhile, the Killaloe Coast Guard Unit was also called to an incident in Portumna, Co. Galway, after a person had entered the water but they were stood down after the situation was dealt with by the local fire service.
