Warnings Of €2bn Irish Water ‘Overspend’

A high-profile economist is warning that up to €2bn is being overspent in the staffing of Irish Water.

The company is obliged by law to pay for local authority employees from around the country who work on the current system.

Professor John Fitzgerald from the ESRI says that means Irish Water will have to pay for more than 4,000 staff, when it only needs around 1,700.

Agreements covering the issue are in place until 2026, and Irish Water says the resources – and numbers of people – involved will be reviewed every year.
