Warning Over Future Of Clare GP Services

A prominent Clare GP is warning that a shortage of doctors here is set to worsen.

Lahinch-based Dr. Michael Kelleher of the Irish Medical Organisation's GP Committee says more than half of GPs here are aged over 55 and that replacing them, on retirement, is increasingly difficult.

Already, Clare is lagging behind the likes of Limerick and Galway when it comes to the number of GPs per head of population.

Dr. Kelleher says this will only worsen unless the government moves to make contracts for doctors more attractive.
