Voting underway on islands for Children’s referendum

Voting’s underway  in the Children’s referendum, as islanders off the West and North coast cast the first ballots.

More than 2-and-a-half thousand islanders off Galway, Mayo and Donegal can take part in early voting from today – it’s a system designed to make sure their ballots will make it to the mainland in time for Sunday’s count.

It comes as the last full day of campaigning takes place today ahead of the moratorium on broadcast media reporting any further coverage of either side of the debate from tomorrow lunchtime.

Opponents of the referendum fear adjusted legislation could take power off parents, even those who are looking after their children well and believe issues surrounding adoptions could be resolved with legislation alone.

But Clare Labour TD Michael McNamara disagrees as he says the rights of the family currently in the constitution would supersede any new laws.
