Voting is slow at many Clare polling stations this lunchtime.
More than 90,000 people throughout the county have the right to vote today in the referendums on family and care.
Voting has been consistent at Clare polling stations today, but while numbers in the early hours seemed roughly in line with previous referendums, the pace hasn’t really picked up ahead of the usual lunchtime surge.
Turnout in Ennis is currently at 7%, Newmarket on Fergus is slightly higher at 10% and only 6% of registered voters in Shannon, Inagh and Quilty have cast their vote.
Voters are being asked to decide on two constitutional changes and are being given two ballot papers today; the first on family and the second on care.
If you’re heading to the polling station to cast your vote, you’ll need to bring ID with you, and your polling card, which you’ll have received in the post, but if you haven’t got one, you’ll also need to bring proof of address with you.
90,101 people in Clare are eligible to vote today and the county’s Returning Officer, Pat Wallace is encouraging them to exercise their “hard won” democratic right.
He says every vote adds up, but is warning voters to ensure their choice is clear on the ballot.
The traditional evening rush is expected after 5 o’clock and polling stations will remain open until 10 o’clock tonight.
