The victim of a fatal single-vehicle collision in south-east Clare has been named as a well-known Meelick rugby player.

It comes on a weekend when two people lost their lives on the roads in this county.

Darren Ryan, aged 30, was killed in the early hours of this morning after the minibus he was driving crashed into Athlunkard Bridge in Corbally on the Clare Limerick-Border.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Young Munster RFC, which was one of his former clubs, have expressed condolences and described him as “an outstanding player whose character lit up the dressing room”.

Meanwhile, Garryowen FC, who he also played for, have characterised him as a “great friend” and have told his family that “words can’t express how much we feel your loss and the pain of losing Darren”.

Investigations are ongoing into a separate fatal road collision which took place in West Clare yesterday and resulted in the death of a woman in her 70s after she was fatally struck by a van on the main N67 Kilrush to Kilkee road at approximately 7:10pm.

Gardaí have renewed their calls for anyone with information on the collision to contact Kilrush Garda Station on 065 908 0550, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
