Varadkar To Meet Canadian PM Today

Canada’s prime minister Justin Trudeau is in Dublin this morning for a meeting with the Taoiseach.

The Canadian premier has a busy day of events, including a meeting with Leo Varadkar at Farmleigh.

Leo Varadkar cited Justin Trudeau as one of his political role models when he was running for the Fine Gael leadership – saying he was an example of energising the political middle ground.

No doubt he might try to pick his brain this morning when the two leaders meet in Farmleigh, when they’ll also discuss issues of mutual interest.

That will probably include the contentious CETA deal – which would allow free trade between Canada and the EU – but would also create controversial paths for companies to sue the State in certain circumstances.

Trudeau has a busy day in Dublin – he’ll also be attending a business roundtable event alongside the Tánaiste and jobs minister Frances Fitzgerald, and visit the EPIC Ireland emigration museum in the docklands.

This afternoon he’ll be at Aras an Uachtarain for a reception with President Higgins – and tonight he’ll be the guest of honour at an official dinner at Dublin Castle, before leaving early tomorrow morning.
