The United States is reinforcing its Pacific missile defences in Guam, as North Korea claims it’s authorised plans for nuclear strikes on US targets.

US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel said Pyongyang’s threats and military capabilities represent a "real and clear danger" to the United States and to its allies South Korea and Japan.

Interceptor missiles, a truck to launch them, and a sophisticated radar system to guide them are being sent to Guam in a show of strength to North Korea.

Paul Roger, professor of Peace Studies at Bradford University, says though the US is "upping the ante" in the region, the real risk is the likelihood of an accident on either side.
