Union sources have moved to somewhat downplay fears that Aer Lingus is not planning to resume transatlantic services from Shannon until 2022.

However, responding to calls for it to clarify its plans for the Airport, the airline has simply told Clare Fm that its 2021 schedule is under “constant review.”

Concerns that Aer Lingus services from Shannon to Boston and New York could be grounded until next summer first arose in an article on the Clare Herald website.

It published an extract from a document circulating among company workers, which claims the grounding of these flights has been extended until 2022.

A SIPTU source has told Clare FM that while the source of this document is unverified, the union is looking to dicuss the matter with the airline during one of their upcoming periodic meetings,

They’re looking for clarity on the airline’s plans for this summer, so that staff can be briefed on the company’s future plans for Shannon.

Up to 130 AER Lingus ground staff and cabin crew at the Midwest airport would be affected by further delays in the resumption of transatlantic services.

Many of these were temporarily laid off for a three month period, up to the start of next month, as a result of the pandemic.

When asked to comment by Clare FM, Aer Lingus said it is “currently flying a significantly reduced schedule” and that it’s “schedule for the duration of 2021, and beyond, remains under constant review.”
