Unemployment In Clare Hits 24-Year-Low

Unemployment hit a 24-year-low in Clare last month.

The latest Central Statistics Office Live Register shows May saw the fifth-lowest number of people signing on in Clare since records began while male unemployment hit its lowest point ever.

A total of 3,497 people in Clare were claiming some form of unemployment benefit last month.

This was the lowest figure since May 2002 and the fifth-lowest for any month since records began.

Men accounted for 1,825, or 52% of this number, with this being the smallest figure for male unemployment in Clare on record.

Ennis once again had the longest dole queues in the county, with 1,880 signing on there, although this was the second-lowest figure ever for the county town.

Kilrush saw 589 people collect social welfare payments while Ennistymon had 542 and Tulla had 456.

Of those on the Live Register in Clare last month, 12% were under the age of 25.
