UN committee calls on Ireland to hold abortion referendum

A United Nations committee is calling on Ireland to hold a referendum on abortion.

The report of the UN committee comes after two days of hearings in Geneva earlier this month, and raises concern about how abortion is not available in Ireland in cases of rape or incest.

It also complains about the difficulty in telling the difference between a threat to a woman's life  – which qualifies for an abortion – and her health, which doesn't.

But campaigners against abortion, like Cora Sherlock of the Pro-Life Campaign, are furious with the findings:

There won't be any immediate action on abortion, however – minister Brendan Howlin has this evening stressed there will be no referendum before the next election.
